Aqqusariaq Recovery Centre will open its doors to the public for the first time next week in an open house.
Health Minister Janet Pitsiulaaq Brewster announced the event in a minister’s statement in the legislative assembly Wednesday.
She announced the open house, hosted by the territorial government, Nunavut Tunngavik Inc., and Indigenous Services Canada, will take place on Nov. 13, but did not announce a time.
“This will be an opportunity for Nunavummiut to tour Aqqusariaq and recognize the people and partnerships behind it,” Brewster said.
The $87-million Aqqusariaq Recovery Centre is located across from the Arctic Winter Games Arena in Iqaluit.
Planning for the facility has been underway for more than a decade, Brewster said during her statement, and while “substantial completion” of the building is done, more work is needed before the facility can begin taking in patients.
The official opening date has yet to be announced, and the Inuit-led not-for-profit tasked with operating the facility will announce it when Aqqusariaq is ready for intake to begin, said Brewster.
