Photo: Renos to Nunavut’s ledge

Workers disassemble desks and remove wiring from inside the Nunavut legislative chamber in Iqaluit May 21 as they prepare for renovations aimed at expanding the room to accommodate three more MLAs following the Oct. 28 territorial election. MLAs voted in 2011 to accept a new electoral map for Nunavut that increases the size of the legislative assembly to 22 members from 19. Workers have already added three new offices inside the legislative building and expanded the size of the board room used for caucus meetings. Now they’ll create more space by reducing the size of the chamber’s porch area and transform the circle of MLA desks into an oval. The cost of the renovation work has been estimated at around $1 million. (PHOTO BY JIM BELL)
