Photo: Discovering the past

Sarah Jancke of Cambridge Bay examines an old belt from the Coronation Gulf area, part of a large collection at the Smithsonian Institute’s National Museum of the American Indian in Washington D.C. Although none of the items she looked at in this collection bore the names of their original owners, Jancke felt sure “there must be something here” belonging to one of her ancestors. Jancke visited New York and Washington D.C. earlier this month, where she participated in the Oct. 4 Conversation With the Earth symposium, “Seeking Balance: Indigenous Knowledge, Western Science and Climate Change,” in Washington D.C.
