By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

A 17-year-old Iqaluit girl who rearranged a classmates jaw was sentenced to four days at the territory’s youth corrections facility after pleading guilty to assault causing bodily harm.

The girl, who cannot be named under the Young Offenders Act, punched a male classmate in the head after a verbal argument over a volleyball game. When the boy started to walk away, the girl punched the complainant in the jaw, the court heard.

The boy’s jaw had to be set and wired.

Andy Mahar, the girl’s lawyer, said his client never intended to inflict as much injury as she did.

Her sentence includes 18 months of probation, during which time she must apologize to the victim and undergo anger management treatment.
