On April 29, RCMP drug section members received information that a man travelling from Pangnirtung to Ottawa via Iqaluit was in possession of a large amount of money, said a May 4 news release from RCMP media liaison officer Sgt. Jimmy Akavak.

Police went to the Iqaluit airport where a 25-year-old male from Pangnirtung was subsequently located, arrested for laundering the proceeds of crime and returned to the RCMP Detachment, Akavak said.

A search of his luggage revealed that he was transporting approximately $55,000.

The money has been seized and the investigation is ongoing, Akavak said.

The male was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court in Iqaluit on July 4.

Akavak urged anyone with any information concerning this investigation or any other investigation, to call the Iqaluit RCMP at 979-1111 or anonymously by calling 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
