Shooter forces evacuation of Pangnirtung neighbourhood
Police later arrest man “without further incident”
A young man with a rifle involved in an a stand-off with police caused police to evacuate a neighbourhood in Pangnirtung June 7.
On June 7, at about 4:15 a.m., the Pangnirtung RCMP received a complaint that a 26-year-old male had fired a gun several times inside his residence.
The area around the residence was “evacuated, secured and resources from Iqaluit were contacted to assist,” said a June 7 RCMP news release.
At approximately 7:00 a.m., the man ran from the residence, unarmed.
Police arrested him “without further incident,” the news release said.
A man is currently in police custody pending a court appearance for charges of careless use of a firearm, and several other criminal offences related to the incident.
No court date has been set at this time, said the release.
