“No reasonable prospect of conviction”

Prosecutors will press no charges against the owner of three dogs that mauled a four-year old boy to death in Pangnirtung last year.

In a May 13 news release, Pangnirtung RCMP said the Public Prosecution Service of Canada concluded “there was no reasonable prospect of conviction” for a charge of criminal negligence causing death in the case.

Three starving sled dogs, allegedly owned by a hamlet bylaw officer, mauled four-year old Sabock Akpalialuk in March, 2010. The dogs had been seen running loose in the community before the attack which took place while the owner was away on medical travel.

“Requests for the owner of the dogs to take action and secure the loose dogs went unheeded,” police said.

But in the wake of the prosecutor’s decision, police said they will take no further action. They did forward the file to the Nunavut coroner’s office for a possible inquest.
