MLA wants new runway at Kimmirut
“Landing is one of the most… exciting experiences air travellers can have.”

South Baffin MLA Fred Schell wants to know when the Government of Nunavut will replace Kimmirut’s small airport and its sloped and dusty runway.
“Its current location and runway severely limit the type of aircraft that can serve the community,” Schell said March 7 in the Nunavut legislature.
“As everyone who has ever flown into Kimmirut can attest, the landing is one of the most, how shall I put it, exciting experiences air travellers can have.”
Schell said the Department of Economic Development and Transportation has given no indication when a feasibility study for a new airport might begin.
The terrain around Kimmirut severely limits the amount of land available for a new facility.
Peter Taptuna, the transportation minister, had no answer for Schell in the house, but took the question as notice, meaning he’ll give a response later.
But last month, during the Baffin mayors forum, Taptuna said Kimmirut’s airport will have its runway resurfaced this year.
