Death, injuries mar Nunavut Day
ATV collision leaves one dead in Rankin Inlet, firearm incidents injure two others
Nunavut Day was a time of a celebration across Nunavut, but this past July 9 also saw three separate incidents that left one person dead and two others injured, news releases from the RCMP said.
In Rankin Inlet, a hit and run collision involving an all-terrain vehicle killed one person in the community.
Members of the RCMP V Division major crimes unit and forensic services flew to Rankin Inlet this past weekend to investigate.
Also on July 9, police in Rankin Inlet received a call that a person at an outpost mining camp had received a gunshot wound and was being medevaced for medical treatment.
An investigation into that incident continues, police said.
On July 9, police in Sanikiluaq learned that a child was shot in a hunting accident.
An investigation revealed that a young person accidentally discharged a firearm, wounding an 11-year-old child.
According to an RCMP news release, the injured child, who did not suffer life-threatening injuries, was medevaced out of the community for medical treatment.
This matter is also under investigation, and the RCMP promised further updates as the investigation proceeds.
