12 year old faces weapon, mischief charges

IQALUIT — Police have charged a 12-year-old Cambridge Bay youth in connection with a recent vandalism spree in the hamlet.

The youth, who can not be identified under the Young Offenders Act, was arrested Monday and charged with several offenses including break and enter, mischief and assault with a weapon.

The youth was released on an undertaking after appearing before a Justice of the Peace. The youth is scheduled to appear in the Nunavut Court of Justice in Cambridge Bay Sept. 20.

The charges follow a string of incidents that included break ins at nearby camps and broken windows in local businesses. Police say a number of other children were identified as being involved in the incidents but could not be prosecuted because they were under the age of 12.

The RCMP is still investigating the incidents and further charges are possible.
