Young swimmer drowns in Arviat
Swimming in deep water proved deadly, police say
People in Arviat are mourning the loss of a young person who drowned July 11 while swimming in the local water reservoir.
Members of the Arviat RCMP received a call about a young person who disappeared under water while swimming with friends, said a July 13 news release from the RCMP.
Witnesses said the young person had trouble swimming in the deep area of the reservoir, and then suddenly disappeared from sight before anyone could help, it said.
A search of the lake was organized in the area where the young person was last seen.
The search team located the youth about 40 minutes later.
The youth was taken to the health center where medical staff confirmed the fatal drowning.
The investigation is continuing in this matter, the RCMP said.
Police suspect no foul play.
Due to the age of the youth, the RCMP did not release the name of the deceased.
