Cape Dorset RCMP quell potential gun incident
Police seize unsecured firearms, arrest youth
RCMP in Cape Dorset prevented a potentially violent incident this past Oct. 15, when they responded to a local youth who threatened to get a firearm for use against another boy.
The two boys had been fighting that day, police said.
At around 8:50 p.m., someone called the RCMP to complain that one boy of the boys said he was going to get a gun “to harm the other,” police said.
Police then arrested the boy and seized a number of unsecured and improperly stored firearms.
On Oct. 16, after the boy appeared before a local justice of the peace, he was released from custody on strict conditions.
He is to appear at a youth court sitting Nov. 23 in Cape Dorset.
In the early morning hours of Oct. 13, two 15-year-old boys obtained unsecured firearms and shot at houses.
In that incident, police wounded one of the boys in an exchange of gunfire. The boy, whose wound was not life-threatening, is now recovering in hospital.
