“By working together, we will be more successful in reaching our goals”

Nunavut Premier Eva Aariak and Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. President Cathy Towtongie signed a new co-operation agreement, called Aajiiqatigiinniq, today in Iqaluit.

Aajiiqatigiinniq sets out how the territorial government and the birthright organization for Nunavut Inuit will work together.

“By working together, we will be more successful in reaching our goals, and will utilize our resources more efficiently when working on our shared priorities. Most importantly, a positive working relationship will produce the best environment to ensure Inuit culture, language, and societal values form the foundation of all that we do,” says the agreement, which replaces Iqqanaijaqatigiit, the first deal between the GN and NTI in 2004.

The agreement focuses on greater partnership in such areas as encouraging self-reliance, raising the standard of living of Inuit, and working together to develop and renew policies, programs, services, and legislation.

“This document reflects the cooperation between the Government of Nunavut and NTI,” Aariak said in an April 20 news release. “It demonstrates our renewed commitment to strengthen our working relationship that benefits Nunavummiut and guides government and NTI.”

“I am excited about this protocol, which builds upon the 1999 Clyde River protocol and 2004 Iqqanaijaqatigiit,” Towtongie said. “Working together on the Aajiiqatigiinniq priority areas is of primary concern to NTI, and I know that with true partnership we can achieve great things.”

Aajiiqatigiinniq can be found on the GN website and the NTI website. See English text of the document below:
