CIBC plans to open a temporary bank in Kuujjuaq
Move follows March 6 fire at the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce
Kuujjuaq-based customers of the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce will finally be able to do all their banking again in person when the community’s new bank branch gets up to speed.
The temporary branch, located at 570 Katingajiit Rd. nearby the Nayumivik landholding corp. office, replaces the CIBC’s former offices on Airport Rd., which were completely destroyed in a March 6 fire.
CIBC spokesman Geoff Dillon couldn’t say exactly when this new branch will be fully operational.
“Our employees are working diligently to prepare the branch for business as quickly as possible,” he said March 22. “We are currently in the process of securing the supplies and technology necessary to operate the branch and have made arrangements to ship all outstanding items.”
In the meantime, CIBC customers can deposit cheques, but not cash, by mailing these to CIBC, P.O. Box 450, Kuujjuaq, QC, J0M 1C0, where they will be processed by bank staff.
CIBC will also refund any fees their Kuujjuaq customers incurred because they had to use non-CIBC automatic bank machines.
Clients can still access their banking information by phone at 1-800-465-CIBC (2422) or online.
