RCMP use taser to quell armed Cape Dorset man
A 25-year-old man confronted police June 21
Cape Dorset has racked up another violent incident involving a young male.
On June 21 members of the local RCMP detachment went to a residence at about 8:00 p.m. to answer a call about a disturbance there.
At the resident, “an intoxicated male brandishing a knife” confronted them, a June 23 news release said.
Police then subdued the man with a taser.
The investigation into this incident continues, police said.
Charges are expected to be laid against a man, 25, who remains in custody.
Last year, gun-toting Cape Dorset residents, mostly distraught young men and boys, produced two murders and at least six dangerous armed standoffs.
Chief Superintendent Steve McVarnock, head of the RCMP V division in Nunavut, said last October that the RCMP wanted work with community leaders in Cape Dorset to help them cope with the violence in the community, but he said then that the police can’t do everything.
“It takes community leadership right down to the individual. We could put 12 officers in there year-round, but if there is no respect for firearms and no respect for alcohol, all we’re doing is recycling the problem,” he said.
