Candidates announced for Iqaluit by-elections

Four will seek mayor’s job, three to run for council seat

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

Iqalummiut have four choices when they go to the polls to elect a new mayor Dec. 13.

Former city councillors Al Hayward and Jim Little are in the running, as are former NTI president Paul Kaludjak, and Madeleine Redfern, executive director of the Qikiqtani Truth Commission.

Three candidates have also emerged to run for the vacant seat on council. Joanasie Akumalik, Ed DeVries and Stephen Mansell are vying for the seat vacated earlier this month by Natsiq Alainga-Kango.

The mayor’s seat came up for grabs when three-term mayor Elisapee Sheutiapik announced her resignation.

Election day is Dec. 13, with polling stations open at the Cadet Hall and Abe Okpik Hall in Apex. Advance polls are open at the Cadet Hall Nov. 29.

Candidates could still drop out if it’s found they aren’t eligible before 5 p.m. Nov. 26.
