As booze goes in, crime goes up, RCMP tells hamlet council

Calls to police rose in January after booze ban ended

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

After an importation ban on booze into Cambridge Bay over the Christmas holidays, crime numbers in January rebounded after alcohol started flowing into the community again, said Sgt. Charlie Gauthier in his Feb. 21 report to the municipal council of Cambridge Bay.

Total calls for service stood at 162 for January, after falling to 112 in December.

Assaults and mischief racked up greatest number of incidents— and these were all alcohol-related, Gauthier told the council.

Cambridge Bay could decide to hold a liquor plebiscite in 2011, which would see the creation of an alcohol education committee and possible restrictions set on alcohol orders to the community.
