New website for the Commissioner of Nunavut

“It’s important for me to stay connected to Nunavummiut”

The Government of Nunavut has launched a new website which promises better access to the Office of the Commissioner of Nunavut.

The newly-designed site, launched June 22, hopes to publicize the activities of the commissioner, Edna Ekhivalak Elias, who will issue messages and speeches through the site.

“It’s important for me to stay connected to Nunavummiut all across the territory and this new user friendly website with photo galleries and highlights will help me do so,” Elias said in a release.

The new website lists all the awards given out by the commissioner in her first year of office, and will be regularly updated.

Elias, sworn into office in May 2010, is serving as the fourth commissioner of Nunavut.

The role of Nunavut’s commissioner is largely symbolic, and Elias serves as head of state at the territorial level.

But the commissioner also gives assent to bills passed in the legislative assembly and can dissolve the assembly following consultation with the executive council.
