A resident and an firefighter both sustained injuries during a fire in House 2251 in Iqaluit’s Lake subdivision, which started around noon on Aug. 24. First responders took the resident to Qikiqtani General Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation, while a firefighter sustained back injuries while taking part in the nearly two-hour operation to extinguish the blaze. The fire drew both of Iqaluit’s fire trucks, along with an ambulance and RCMP and municipal bylaw officers who directed traffic away from the burning building.
Oliver said the top left-hand unit of the 2251 fourplex took “non-structural damage,” and the building is repairable.
The other three units of the building took smoke damage, but no direct fire damage.
The cause of the fire is under RCMP investigation. (PHOTO BY GABRIEL ZARATE)
