Nunavut police announce arrest in month-old murder case
Susie Nakashuk, 30, faces second-degree murder charge
Police made an arrest March 26 in connection with the February killing of an Iqaluit man.
Susie Nakashuk, 30, was arrested last Friday and now faces a charge of second degree murder in the death of Kelly Lucassie, 43.
In a news release issued Tuesday afternoon, RCMP said Nakashuk is in custody, but no date for her first court appearance had yet been set.
More than five weeks passed between Lucassie’s death and Nakashuk’s arrest.
“Homicide investigations are lengthy and it took that long to gather sufficient evidence to make an arrest,” said Sgt. Jimmy Akavak.
Lucassie was found mortally wounded inside unit 309C on Feb. 19. Paramedics rushed him to Qikiqtani General Hospital where he died shortly after of a stab wound to the chest.
Police said there was no known relationship between Nakashuk and Lucassie.
