Three men charged with a violent assault in Cambridge Bay earlier this month made their first appearances in an Iqaluit court Tuesday and will return to court next month.

Hadi Alhashesh, 19, of Chilliwack, B.C., Ly Gabriel Galido, 22, of Edmonton, Alta., and Ayaan Kamran Warsi, 18, also of Edmonton, appeared in court virtually from Iqaluit jail Tuesday.

The men each face multiple charges including two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of forcible confinement, robbery with a firearm, and trafficking a controlled substance.

The three will return to court Aug. 19

A fourth man who did not appear Tuesday, 19-year-old Joshua MacPherson of Cambridge Bay, is charged with two counts of assault. He was released and is scheduled to appear in court in Cambridge Bay on Sept. 8.

All four were charged following an assault early on July 8 that sent two victims to an Edmonton hospital. Cambridge Bay Mayor Wayne Gregory, MLA Pamela Gross and RCMP Supt. Kent Pike later hosted a community meeting to address residents’ fears over public safety following the incident.
