Nunavik headed into the Christmas weekend with an increase in COVID-19 cases, according to the Nunavik Regional Board of Health and Social Services’ latest update.
Three new cases reported on Dec. 24 brought the region’s number of active cases to 22. The new cases were spread across three villages.
Kangiqsualujjuaq has the highest number of cases at 14, including two new ones since the health board’s Dec. 23 update. That village is the region’s COVID-19 hotspot with nearly two-thirds of the region’s cases.
The other new case is in Quaqtaq, which is that village’s only case.
Salluit, which had been Nunavik’s hotspot several weeks ago is down to two cases. Kuujuuaq and Tasiujaq also each had two cases as of Friday.
And Akulivik reported a single case.
The Nunavik health board did not provide any information about whether any of the cases were of the fast-spreading Omicron variant. Fear of Omicron prompted Nunavut’s chief public health officer to impose strict public health measures last week that amounted to a lockdown.
It’s important the Health Board inform us if the new covid cases are the omicron variant.
That variant is mild between the common cold and flu, whereas others can be much more serious.
