Four candidates are in the running to be the next mayor of Coral Harbour.

A byelection was announced in February after former mayor Kupakik Ningeocheak, who was acclaimed to the position a few months ago, stepped down from office.

The deadline for candidates to be added to the ballot closed March 18. Elections Nunavut posted the official list of candidates yesterday to the Coral Harbour Facebook page.

Those vying to replace him are Aidan Saviakjuk, Lenny Emiktaut, Patterk Netser, and Willie Nakoolak.

Voting is scheduled for April 15 with advance voting taking place April 8 from 12 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Coral Harbour hamlet office.

Nakoolak was serving as councillor for the hamlet until he stepped down to become interim mayor. He also served as mayor of Coral Harbour in 2014 after a byelection that year.

Netser is a former MLA. He served from 2017 to 2021, when he was defeated by current MLA Solomon Malliki. Netser was removed from cabinet in 2020 after he made controversial social media posts about the Black Lives Matter movement and abortion.
