Lawmakers want more face time on the boob-tube
Two northern legislatures team up to pitch the CRTC
The legislative assemblies of Nunavut and the Northwest Territories want Canada’s broadcast regulator to require cable and satellite TV operators to carry legislative proceedings from the two territories.
In a six-page joint submission to the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission, the two legislatures argue that satellite TV providers would provide channels for legislative programming if the CRTC declares them to be “must-carry” services.
In a news release, James Arreak, the speaker of Nunavut’s Legislative Assembly, said ensuring northerners can watch the proceedings of their assemblies could even “foster the goal of asserting Canada’s Arctic sovereignty.”
The CRTC is mulling new rules on the licencing of television and is looking for ways to boost the production of local programming.
