Premier Eva Aariak announced a major re-assignment of cabinet portfolios Nov. 21, following the resignation of Rankin Inlet North MLA Tagak Curley from cabinet, where he had served as minister of Health and Social Services and minister responsible for the Nunavut Housing Corp.
Cambridge Bay MLA Keith Peterson will take responsibility for the health and social services department.
Peterson remains as finance minister, but his other major portfolio, the Department of Justice, will go to Arviat MLA Dan Shewchuk.
Shewchuk, in turn, will give up the environment portfolio to Uqqummiut MLA James Arreak.
Baffin South MLA Fred Schell will pick up responsibility for the Nunavut Housing Corp., and will serve as minister responsible for homelessness and minister responsible for the Workers’ Safety and Compensation Board.
Kugluktuk MLA Peter Taptuna will now serve as minister responsible for energy.
The various portfolios currently held by Aariak and by Rankin Inlet South-Whale Cove MLA Lorne Kusugak will remain unchanged. (See full list embedded below.)
Curley tendered his resignation Nov. 16, a GN news release said.
“Minister Curley was an important member of our cabinet, always promoting lively discussion and thoughtful analysis of policy issues. We all wish him the very best as he embarks upon a new chapter of his life,” Aariak said in a news release.
Curley will remain in cabinet without portfolio until Nov. 30.
The news follows a cabinet retreat held last week.
