Any event that celebrates diversity is good

“We are all a lot more the same than we are different”

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

I write this in thanks to all the great people who put on the Black History month event recently in Iqaluit.

Long live the African diaspora! Any event that celebrates diversity, especially ones with great food and music, are such a gift!

I had recently learned of the tragic death of a Sudanese Canadian doctor who had returned to his homeland to help build the new country of South Sudan. The last six months has seen a blood bath in parts of this still hopeful new country, where I worked in 2001.

Dr. Thomas Lul was shot in crossfire, along with many other non-military people. War sucks. And lots of conflicts great and small, stem from intolerance and thinking of certain people as other.

Colour, sexuality, nationality, whatever culture we are from, we are all a lot more the same than we are different.
