Armed Iqaluit man, 21, surrenders after morning standoff
Distraught man gives himself up following negotiations with police
A 21-year-old Iqaluit man surrendered to police Aug. 9 following a morning standoff in the Lower Base area of the city near the Northmart store that lasted more than three hours.
Just after 6 a.m. Aug. 9, members of the RCMP emergency response team, many armed with rifles and camouflage gear, set up road blocks and surrounded a house located in the residential area just behind Northmart.
After about three hours, police negotiators persuaded the young man, who had barricaded himself into a house with a firearm, to give himself up.
No one was injured. Police have not yet identified the young man or listed the offences he will be charged with.
