Iqaluit standoff leads to three charges
RCMP set up roadblocks near Northmart before Iqaluit man surrendered himself
Police have laid three charges in connection with an armed standoff in Iqaluit Aug. 9 in the Lower Base area of the city, Sgt. Yvonne Niego of the Nunavut RCMP told Nunatsiaq News Aug. 13.
Kakee Kootoo, 21, is charged with possession of a dangerous weapon, careless use of a firearm and breaching a probation condition, Niego said.
A distraught man had barricaded himself in a house in the early hours of Aug. 9.
He was there for about three hours before police, who set up road blocks and surrounded the house just behind Northmart, persuaded him to give himself up. No one was injured.
Kootoo will appear before a judge Aug. 25 at the Nunavut Court of Justice in Iqaluit, Niego said.
