Aviation scholarships now available in Nunavut
Each grant worth $5,000 to eligible student
At least four Nunavut residents may be eligible for aviation career scholarships that until now have been available only to residents of the Northwest Territories, a joint press release issued June 30 said.
The scholarships, each worth $5,000, are offered through the Aviation Career Development Program, which was started in 2000 by the Government of the Northwest Territories and the Northern Air Transport Association.
This year, the Government of Nunavut joined the program, offering four scholarships to Nunavut residents.
“We rely on air transportation for food, fuel, health care and personal transportation,” Peter Taptuna, Nunavut’s minister of transportation, said in the news release.
Another new scholarship is offered by Keewatin Air LP.
“All of us benefit when we can hire from the community the people we need, with the training and skills we require,” said Wayne McLeod, the president of Keewatin Air.
Adlair Aviation and Discovery Air, which owns Air Tindi and Great Slave Helicopters, also sponsor aviation scholarships under the program.
This year, the deadline for applications is July 29.
