The Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency is giving the Baffin Regional Chamber of Commerce $100,000 to help pay for activities at the upcoming Nunavut Trade Show in Iqaluit.

The Nunavut Trade Show is scheduled for Sept. 27 to Sept. 29 in Iqaluit, with most activities to be held at the Arctic Winter Games arena.

To boost the event, CanNor will give the BRCC $35,000 to organize conference sessions that bring business and government representatives together, and another $65,000 to pay the cost of what the BRCC calls “industry sector workshops.”

“Participants will also learn about establishing enterprises to take advantage of those sectors,” a CanNor document said.

These workshops will focus on areas like mining, the fishery, tourism, and arts and culture. The Baffin chamber will travel to some selected Baffin communities to offer them, CanNor said in a news release.

“By delivering workshops that are geared to the needs of northern communities, businesses will be better positioned to take advantage of economic development opportunities in the region,” Nunavut MP Leona Aglukkaq, the minister responsible for CanNor, said in the news release.

The annual Nunavut Trade Show in Iqaluit brings together businesses from southern and northern Canada, along with a long list of federal and territorial governments.

The show will open to the public Sept. 29 between 10:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Most other sessions are open only to registered delegates.

The first day, Sept. 27, features a session on mining entitled “Getting your share of major developments,” with speakers that include Tom Hoefer from the NWT-Nunavut Chamber of Mines, Brooke Clements of Peregrine Diamonds, Charlie Evalik of Nunavut Resources Corp. and Graeme Dargo of Agnico-Eagle.

Sept. 28 will feature conferences and workshops devoted to government grant programs for businesses and Sept. 29 features conferences on tourism and cultural industries.

Also on Sept. 28, the organization will hold an awards dinner at the Discovery Lodge in Iqaluit.
