Cape Dorset cops investigate two break-ins

Cape Dorset police say they are investigating two break-and-enters that occurred on the evening of Nov. 14 at the Cape Dorset hamlet office and the community’s Government of Nunavut building.

But those who did break into the hamlet office aren’t exactly the sharpest tools in the shed, according to Mike Hayward, senior administrative officer for Cape Dorset.

“Whoever broke in here, they left footprints. So basically all [the RCMP] have to do is find out whoever they pick up and check their sneakers, and see if their prints match,” Hayward said.

“I think [the RCMP] got a few names but they wouldn’t say [who]. So I think they’re just going to go to their normal suspects first and go from there,” Hayward said.

Cape Dorset RCMP Cst. Andrew Kerstens said this is the first break-in in Cape Dorset in a long time. He said the RCMP are continuing their investigation of the case.

But Hayward sees a pattern in break-and-enters in Cape Dorset.

“Well, there hasn’t been any break-ins for a while, but then they started again, and then they stopped again… it’s like someone comes back into town, and all of a sudden it’s picked up again,” Hayward said.

The thieves didn’t take a lot from the hamlet office, but they did damage some filing cabinets.

Hayward said he thinks the thieves were looking for cash only, as they avoided taking any of the expensive computers sitting in the office.

The GN building took a little more damage with a few smashed windows. It’s unknown what was removed from the office, however.

For now, it’s business as usual at both buildings.
