Michael Cameron has resigned as president and board member of the Kativik Municipal Housing Bureau, the organization said in a Feb. 13 release.
Cameron was first appointed to the KHMB board in 2006 by the Kativik Regional Government, as one of its regional councillors. He has served as president of the board since April 2010.
“The KMHB wishes to thank Michael for his years of service and leadership in the improvement of social housing in Nunavik and wish him well is his future endeavours,” the KHMB said in the release.
The KMHB faced criticism a number of times in 2013. The organization apologized after a Quaqtaq man who was evicted from social housing had his makeshift shack demolished by KMHB staff last fall.
A month later, social housing tenants across Nunavik showed up at KMHB offices to protest the agency’s recent rent hikes and eviction policies.
In both cases, Cameron had to be the public face of the organization, which itself must deal with the widespread housing shortage across Nunavik.
Cameron declined to comment on his resignation.
The KHMB’s vice-chair, George Berthe, will assume the role of president in the interim until the full board can convene to select a new one, something the KMHB hopes to do by March.
The KHMB’s other board members include Richard Jones (secretary-treasurer), Jennifer Watkins and Mary Nassak (KRG representatives) and Delaila Amarualik and Eva Angnatuk (tenants representatives.)
