A fire at a camp Aug. 16 has claimed the life of a child, police told Nunatsiaq News Aug. 18.
Members of the Pond Inlet RCMP detachment were notified 10:45 a.m. that a family of two adults and four children had been injured in an early-morning tent fire, RCMP spokesperson Yvonne Niego said Aug. 18.
Neighbouring campers called in to Pond Inlet Search and Rescue which sent a helicopter to the site, about two hours west of the north Baffin community.
Two doctors who were on a visiting cruise ship assisted in Pond Inlet until the injured people were medevaced during the afternoon of Aug. 16, Niego said.
One of the family members had been in critical condition, and the others serious but stable, she said.
”Since yesterday, one child has succumbed,” she said.
An investigation into the fire continues.
