Clarification

The editorial published Sept. 7 gives revenue estimates for the City of Iqaluit that are based on figures derived from the city’s budgets between 2006 and 2009 and published in the city’s Piqutivut Building our capital document.

The City of Iqaluit’s operating budget for 2012, when city council passed it this past January, was estimated at $29.4 million and the total budget was estimated at $34 million.

In a recent document, the city estimates that municipal taxes could rise by 1.14 per cent a year for seven years if the cost of a proposed aquatic centre is shared by the municipal, territorial and federal governments.

The same document estimates that, if the city finances the aquatic centre on its own, municipal taxes could rise by 3.888 per cent a year for four years, by 1.7 per cent for the two following years and by .09 per cent in the seventh year.
