The Kivalliq Inuit Association posted its unofficial list of election candidates Nov. 6, including five people who have put their names forward to run for the position of vice-president in the upcoming Dec. 8 elections.

Raymond Ningoecheak is KIA’s current vice-president, running to hold onto his seat. The Coral Harbour leader, who has served a vice president for finance at Nunavut Tunngavik Inc., is a long-time champion of Inuit harvesting rights.

Also vying for the position is Donna Adams, who has sat on both the KIA and Sakku boards of directors in the past.

The mother of three, who works as a personal education credit coordinator with NTI in Rankin Inlet, has also served as president of Qulliit Nunavut Status of Women.

Two other candidates hail from Rankin Inlet; Hamish Tatty, general manager of M&T Enterprises, and Cedric Autut, who has worked as secretary-treasurer for the Kivalliq Wildlife Board.

A fifth candidate, Stanley Adjuk, currently serves as chair of the Whale Cove Hunters and Trappers Organization.

Inuit beneficiaries in the Kivalliq will also vote Dec. 8 for three community directors, in Repulse Bay, Whale Cove and Rankin Inlet.

The KIA’s list of candidates will be made official later this week.

Any voter who wishes to challenge the eligibility of the candidates should contact the KIA by 3:00 p.m. Nov. 6, said its returning officer Lisa Airut.
