Four people nominated for vice president of Qikiqtani Inuit Association
QIA beneficiaries head to the polls Dec. 9
Four people have been nominated to contest the Qikiqtani Inuit Association’s vice president position in an election to be held Dec. 9 among eligible Qikiqtani region beneficiaries, QIA announced Nov. 20.
The four nominees are:
• Larry Audlaluk of Grise Fiord;
• Abraham Kublu of Pond Inlet;
• James Qillaq of Clyde River; and
• Meeka Kilabuk of Iqaluit.
The final list of candidates will become official Nov. 25.
That’s because any beneficiary who believes a candidate is not eligible may, within 72 hours, state their reasons in writing to the QIA chief returning officer.
The chief returning officer, Navarana Beveridge, may be reached at:
(867) 975-8400 (Voice)
(867) 979-3238 (Fax)
nbeveridge@qia.ca (Email)
The vice president position opened up after the departure of former vice president George Eckalook this past June, when he resigned for personal reasons.
Larry Audlaluk, the community director for Grise Fiord, was appointed to fill in for Eckalook as interim vice president.
Earlier this month, Audlaluk resigned as Grise Fiord community director to run for the permanent version of the vice president’s position.
Also on Dec. 9, beneficiaries in Pangnirtung will go to the polls to choose a new community director.
The Pangnirtung candidates are:
• Tommy Akulujuk;
• Abraham Keenainak;
• Jaypatee Qappik; and
• Limee Nakashuk.
QIA said beneficiaries should contact their local community liaison officer or the chief returning officer to find out if their names appear on the voters list.
