New positions will better serve community’s youth

The hamlet of Clyde River has created new positions within its recreation department to better serve the community’s youth.

Just this week, the hamlet appointed a new director of recreation and community services, Nina Qillaq.

Qillaq, who used to work as the hamlet’s lands administrative officer, say she hopes to use her new role to secure more funding to pay for programming and new sporting equipment.

“We don’t really have resources to participate in events like the Arctic Winter Games or in tournaments going on in other communities,” Qillaq said. “So I’m hoping I’ll be the voice for that.”

Qillaq also hopes her new role will help the hamlet create a better relationship with the local school and develop shared recreation programs for Clyde River youth in this community of 820.

Along with its new recreation director, the hamlet also plans to hire a recreation programmer later this week who will be responsible for coordinating event and programs at the community hall.

“We are very excited to have someone with Nina’s community experience and commitment serving in this new role,” said the hamlet’s chief administrative officer Troy Jenkins in a Feb. 13 news release. “It is important for us as a community to do all that we can to serve the needs of all our residents.

“An improved and expanded recreation department will go a long way in accomplishing this.”
