Inuit org congratulates Nunavut’s bowhead whale hunters for successful hunt
“These events bring Inuit together and are a perfect time to celebrate community spirit and pride”
The Qikiqtani Inuit Association said in an Aug. 8 statement that it’s “thankful and happy” for the hunters of Pangnirtung who caught a bowhead whale Aug. 6.
“On behalf of Inuit in the Qikiqtani region, I congratulate the Sarpigait hunting committee for a successful hunt,” said QIA President Okalik Eegeesiak.
“These events bring Inuit together and are a perfect time to celebrate community spirit and pride. I look forward to joining the celebrations this weekend in Pangnirtung!”
The maktak is currently being butchered and transported back to Pangnirtung where it will feed hundreds of people within the community as well as other communities, the QIA said.
More than 30 hunters in six boats successfully landed the bowhead, which measured about 12 metre (41 feet, six inches), west of Kekerten Island near Pangnirtung at about 1 p.m. Aug. 6.
The hunt was led by Simeonie Keenainak, captain of the hunt and noted accordion player, former RCMP constable and teacher, with Charlie Qummuatuq as co-captain.
