Iqaluit city council defers deputy mayor appointment
Council will chose a successor to the late David Ell at its next meeting
Iqaluit city council agreed April 17 to wait until a future meeting, when more city councilors are in attendance, to appoint a successor to the late David Ell as deputy mayor.
Ell, 53, died unexpectedly on the afternoon of March 26.
Only Coun. Jimmy Kilabuk, Coun. Simon Nattaq and Coun. Romeyn Stevenson, along with Mayor Madeleine Redfern, were able to attend at the city council chambers.
Coun. Stephen Mansell was connected to the meeting by telephone to make up a quorum.
Councillors, clearly affected by Ell’s loss arrived at the meeting in a sombre mood.
“He was a good man, a family man,” Mansell said.
