A 29-year-old Iqaluit man, Tommy Holland, who faces five charges in connection with a hit-and-run incident Jan. 17 that injured a seven-year-old boy, was scheduled to appear before a justice of the peace in Iqaluit Jan. 19, Crown prosecutor Leah Winters confirmed to Nunatsiaq News.
But defence lawyer Nigel Marshman asked Justice of the Peace Nicole Sikma for an adjournment in order to develop a show-cause plan prior to a show-cause hearing.
Holland, who did not appear in court Jan. 19, is charged with five offences. They are:
• one count of dangerous driving resulting in injury;
• one count of failing to stop at the scene of an accident;
• one count of impaired driving causing injury;
• one count of driving while disqualified; and
• one count of resisting or obstructing a peace officer.
Sikma scheduled Holland to appear again before a justice of the peace on Jan. 22 at 1:30 p.m. for a show-cause hearing.
A show cause hearing is a pre-trial process held to determine whether an accused person should be held in custody while the court deals with their case. It’s sometimes called a bail hearing.
The seven-year-old boy, who police say was injured when an all-terrain vehicle hit him on Jan.17, sustained minor injuries.
The driver of the ATV also hit and damaged a parked vehicle.
