Nunavut police believe an Iqaluit hunter has died after falling through the ice on Frobisher Bay.

When a 68-year-old Iqaluit man did not return when expected from a hunting trip, Iqaluit search and rescue volunteers set out about 11:00 p.m. Jan. 30 to look for him, the RCMP said in a Feb. 1 release.

The following day, Jan. 31, searchers found the hunter’s belongings roughly 30 kilometres south of Iqaluit on Frobisher Bay.

Police say evidence at the scene indicates the hunter fell through the ice and died.

“Our thoughts go out to the family and community members who have been affected by this sudden loss,” police said Feb. 1.
