Flags are flying at half-mast at Iqaluit’s City Hall, the elders qammaq and the Arctic Winter Games Arena in honour of Deputy Mayor David Ell, 53, who died unexpectedly on the afternoon of March 26.

Ell was elected to Iqlauit City Council in 2009. He was appointed deputy mayor in 2009, and was reaffirmed to that position in 2011, Iqaluit’s Mayor Madeleine Redfern said in a March 27 statement.

“I am truly saddened to hear about the passing of Deputy Mayor David Ell. David served with integrity and honour. As mayor and as a friend, I wish to offer my sincere condolences on behalf of the city and our citizens to his family for the loss of a much loved and respected man. David was a big man with a big heart and he will be greatly missed by many.”
