Jack Anawak thanks the people of Coral Harbour

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

I would like to thank the people of Coral Harbour, who helped me when I became ill on the land, 60 miles southwest of their community.

Search and rescue members Mike Emikowt, Enuapik Ell and Jackie Nakoolak were very quick to respond and professional in their efforts.

The nurses at the health centre and the visiting doctor were also very helpful to me. Thanks, again, to the people of Coral Harbour, for their concern, their kindess and for all the assistance they provided.

Having become ill, it was very worrisome for me to be out there with my three sons and nephew, but their concern and their support proved to be very reassurring.

This was my third crossing over Hudson Bay and again, i was with Simeonie Netser, who I met, as he was going the other way. He helped keep up my spirits and was good company along with his two sons, who also helped out quite a lot.

Thanks also, to so many other people, for their ongoing expressions of concern for me and for their support.

Our quick rescue was made possible by carrying a SPOT finder, so people, including our family members, could actually see, on their computer, exactly where we were located.

I highly recommend that individuals and communities invest in SPOT finders. It has three possible settings: “We are just camping,” “We need help but it is not an emergency,” and “SOS! (Help! It is an emergency!”)

This proved to be a valuable device and can save time and money for searching, as well as making sure your family stays involved and knows where you are and how you are doing.
