Boating on the Koksoak River near Kuujjuaq and in other Nunavik communities in September is a big draw — but if you go boating, stay safe, the Kativik Regional Government counsels.

Thinking about heading out on the water without a lifejacket?

Think again.

The Kativik Regional Government has a message for Nunavik’s boaters: please navigate the end of the season safely.

The KRG’s civil security unit is encouraging boaters to not only carry, but wear a personal flotation device at all times while on a vessel.

That will ensure that any passengers who fall overboard stay afloat, and stay breathing, said the KRG’s Sept. 4 release.

The shock resulting from being in cold water can generate stress on the body, said the release, which can prompt increased heart rate, spikes in blood pressure and even stroke or heart attack.

The KRG also asks boat captains to ensure their vessel is always well-maintained and ready for use. Boaters should always check weather and tide forecasts before heading out, and tell family or friends where and when they are going.

The release also warns about drinking alcohol while driving a boat, calling that mix “a recipe for accidents and tragedies.”

The civil security department advises boaters to carry these items with them to ensure safe travelling:

• compass and maps;

• first aid kit;

• blankets;

• two oars (pautik);

• extra rope;

• life jackets (fitted) for each passengers;

• flashlight;

• HF radio, satellite telephone or a Spot tracker device; and,

• lighter or matches.
