KIA partners with NWT group to offer mine training

CAMBRIDGE BAY — The Kitikmeot Inuit Association has formed a partnership with the Northwest Territories Mine Training Society to organize and deliver mine-related training in the Kitikmeot region, Charlie Evalik, the KIA president, said Oct. 4.

The KIA, which will kick in at least $300,000 of its own money over the next three years for the project, expects “these funds will be matched with cash and in-kind contributions provided by government and industry.”

“KIA recognizes the importance of the mining sector to our region’s current and future economy. We view this promising sector with the hope that it can help our communities by providing well paid jobs for our young people. However, the mining industry demands highly skilled workers who are equipped with the education and training necessary to take on work in 21st century mines. This partnership with the NWT Mine Training Society will go a long way in bridging the skills gap for Inuit in the Kitikmeot,” Evalik said in a KIA news release.

Two of the society’s industry members, Diavik Diamond Mine Inc. and BHP Billiton, also have existing relationships and agreements with the KIA, the KIA said.

“This new partnership initiative will go a long way in helping the Inuit of the Kitikmeot to obtain the skills necessary to obtain employment in the mining sector,” said Hilary Jones, the general manager of the Mine Training Society.

Many during the KIA annual general meeting, underway in Cambridge Bay, have said they want to see a Nunavut mine training organization in the Kitikmeot region.
