Kugluktuk girl dies at local playground

RCMP encourage communities to check their playground equipment

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

Nunavut police are reminding parents and children about playground safety after a six-year-old Kugluktuk girl died in a tragic accident Feb. 20.

The young girl was at the local playground with another five-year-old friend around 4:30 that afternoon when a piece of her clothing caught on a bungee cord hook that had been left hanging on the playground equipment.

When the child was unable to free herself, the five-year-old ran to get the victim’s mother.

The six-year-old was taken to local health centre where she was pronounced dead.

The RCMP won’t release the cause of death, but police have determined that the death was accidental.

The Nunavut RCMP encourages residents in all communities to check the equipment in their local playgrounds and ensure that they are kept free of anything that could result in a similar tragedy.
