Lawyers still gather info on Nunavut mother charged with homicide
Six-year-old daughter of Shepa Jar died in May

Crown lawyers have not yet finished analyzing evidence against Shepa Jar, 28, of Coral Harbour and preparing it for disclosure to defence lawyers. Lawyers will speak to the case once more this Sept. 7. Jar faces once count of second degree murder and two counts of attempted murder. (FILE PHOTO)
The Crown continues to work on its case against a Coral Harbour woman charged with one count of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder, lawyers said Aug. 8 at the Nunavut Court of Justice in Iqaluit.
The charges facing Shepa Jar, 28, are connected to a knife attack in which her six-year-old daughter died this past May.
Jar has remained at the Baffin Women’s Correctional Centre in Iqaluit since a justice of the peace remanded her there June 2 after her first court appearance.
Crown lawyer Barry McLaren told Justice Neil Sharkey Aug. 8 that his office is currently reviewing reports provided by the RCMP, but the volume of the information will require time to analyze, McLaren said.
Sharkey told lawyers to meet again Sept. 7 when they can provide the court with an update.
Jar did not appear in court Aug. 8.
This past May 12, Coral Harbour RCMP members, responding to a call, found Jar and her three children suffering from multiple stab wounds.
Jar’s daughter, six, was pronounced dead at the local health centre later that day, while Jar and her two young sons — one aged four and the other five months old — were medevaced to a hospital in Winnipeg.
Jar was charged May 29, after she was released from hospital.
After recovering from their injuries, her two surviving children were placed in the care of family members.
