Makivik election officials doing recount in presidential vote

Updated results expected later this afternoon

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

Makivik Corp. election officials are doing a recount of yesterday’s presidential election results, Nunatsiaq News has learned.

On Jan. 19, Nunavik beneficiaries elected Jobie Tukkiapik as Makivik’s new president with 1,297 votes, unseating long-time president Pita Aatami.

Aatami finished in second place with 1,274 ballots — a mere 23 votes behind Tukkiapik.

Officials started a recount of votes for each Nunavik community Jan. 20. But it’s not clear if the recount was requested by another candidate or if officials decided to verify the close count before making the complete election results public.

Updated results should be available later this afternoon.

Third-place presidential candidate Charlie Watt finished with 984 votes Jan. 19, while fourth-place Harry Tulugak took 256.
