Man charged in homicide, sexual assault of Akulivik girl, 15

An Akulivik man was to appear last week in court in Amos to face charges related to the death of a 15-year-old girl on Jan. 18.

Police were called to a residence in Akulivik on Jan. 22 at about 10:30 p.m., Marc Tessier, a spokesperson for the Sûreté du Québec provincial police force, told Nunatsiaq News.

Members of the major crimes squad of the SQ flew into the community on the eastern coast of Hudson Bay in Nunavik.

Following their investigation, Eli Qingalik, 18, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, sexual assault and desecrating human remains.

Court clerks were unable to provide information about Qingalik’s next court appearance.
