Man dies in Baker Lake snowmobile accident

Wife remains in critical but stable condition

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

A snowmobile ride outside of Baker Lake ended fatally Dec. 11 when the driver veered off a snow cliff just outside the community.

RCMP in Baker Lake arrived at the scene of the accident last Sunday evening to discover two injured adult passengers – a male and female – had fallen over the five-metre cliff, roughly 200 metres north of the community.

It’s not clear what the weather conditions were like at the time of the accident.

Both were transported to Baker Lake Health Centre where the driver, 61-year-old Harry William Zellman was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

The female passenger, identified only as Zellman’s wife, sustained injuries and remains in stable but critical condition.

Police did not suspect alcohol, drugs or foul play played a role in the accident.

But anyone who has information about the incident is asked to contact Baker Lake RCMP at (867) 793-0123.
